New York, NY (October 25, 2016) – The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has published the 2016 update to its book publishing subject codes, often referred to as BISAC Subject Headings.
The codes are reviewed and updated periodically by members of BISG’s Subject Codes committee, led by Connie Harbison of Baker & Taylor. This year’s updates added 94 subject headings, deactivated 11 and made 68 changes to the way certain codes are named.
Committee efforts included reviews of categories that included History, Performing Arts (Film and Television) and Games and Activities. Requests and suggestions received from members of the publishing community were also considered.
Work on the current update began in November 2015. Public review and comment took place between August 29 and September 21, and the BISG Board of Directors approved the recommended updates on September 29.
The subject codes can be downloaded now from the BISG web site (www.bisg.org). Members can log into a BISG account to download the updated list at no charge. Non-members can purchase access on a sliding scale related to a firm’s annual publishing revenues.
A webinar explaining subject codes, their uses and the 2016 update is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern Time on November 9. The webinar is offered without charge to both members and non-members.
