BISG's Annual Industry Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and service. They reflect BISG's mission of facilitating member-sourced solutions for the benefit of the entire publishing community. Recipients are honored at BISG's Annual Meeting of Members, held each September in New York.

Why are BISG's annual industry awards important?

2016 Awards

Recipients of BISG's 2016 awards were honored at BISG's Annual Meeting of Members on September 30, 2016, held at the Masonic Lodge on 23rd Street in New York City.  The event was made possible through the generous support of SPi Global, our diamond sponsor, and Bowker, our platinum sponsor.

  • The BISG Award for Excellence recognizes an individual’s outstanding work on behalf of BISG over the course of a career. This year's recipient is John Ingram, Chairman, Ingram Content Group. He was recognized for driving the transformation of his company, making it a comprehensive publishing industry services partner offering physical book distribution, print-on-demand and digital publishing services across a wide range of markets.

  • The BISG Volunteer of the Year recognizes the recipient’s commitment to solving industry challenges and finding new opportunities by working collaboratively with industry peers. This year's recipient is Tzviya Siegman, Information Standards Lead at John Wiley & Sons. The shortlist of nominees included:

    • Noah Genner, a member of the BISG board and CEO, Booknet Canada
    • Richard Stark, Chair of the Metadata Committee and Director of Product Data, Barnes & Noble, Inc.
    • Shayna Webb-Dray, Chair of BISG's Supply-Chain Committee and Executive Director of Operations at Kaplan Publishing
  • The Industry Champion Award is given to an individual whose efforts have gone beyond the requirements of his or her position to advance the publishing industry while embracing BISG's mission to facilitate innovation and shared solutions for the benefit of all companies and practitioners who create, produce, and distribute published content. This year's recipient is George Kerscher, Chief Innovations Officer of the DAISY Consortium, Senior Advisor - Global Literacy to Benetech and President of the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). The shortlist of nominees included:
  • Dave Cramer, Senior Digital Publishing Technology Specialist, Hachette Book Group
  • Maureen McMahon, President and Publisher, Kaplan Publishing
  • Tzviya Siegman, Information Standards Lead, John Wiley & Sons

  • The BISG Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual's outstanding work on behalf of BISG. This year, the chairs of BISG's committees and working groups were each given awards for their tireless efforts in the area of standards and best practices. Those recognized include:

  • The BISG Industry Innovation Award salutes the company or individual who boldly reimagines what publishing is and can be. This year's recipient is Dominique Raccah, CEO of Sourcebooks, former chair and current member of the BISG board.

    The shortlist of nominees included:

    • Tom Chalmers, Founder, IPR License
    • George Kerscher, Chief Innovations Officer of the DAISY Consortium, Senior Advisor - Global Literacy to Benetech and President of the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF)
    • Chris Sim, Founder and CEO of Kadaxis

Candidates for the BISG Award for Excellence and the Most Valuable BISG Volunteer are nominated by BISG staff and a jury of industry professionals and selected by the jury. Candidates for the Distinguished Service, Industry Champion and Industry Innovation Awards are nominated by members of BISG. Recipients of these awards are then selected by the jury.

2015 Awards

BISG's 2015 award shortlists and recipients in four categories were honored at BISG's Annual Meeting of Members on September 18, 2015, in New York City.  

  • The Lifetime Service Award recognizes an individual’s outstanding work on behalf of BISG over the course of a career. The 2015 recipient was Tom Clarkson, Cumberland Systems Review Group. Read the announcement here.

  • The Most Valuable BISG Volunteer Award cecognizes the recipient’s commitment to solving industry challenges and finding new opportunities by working collaboratively with industry peers. The 2015 recipient was Connie Harbison, Chair of the Subject Codes Committees and Director of Quality Assurance, Baker & Taylor. The shortlist of nominees also included:
    • Michael Olenick, Chair of the Thema Working Group of the Subject Codes Committeeand Business Analyst, Bowker
    • Richard Stark, Chair of the Metadata Committee and Director of Product Data, Barnes & Noble, Inc.
    • Catherine Toolan, key contributor to the Metadata Committee's ONIX 3.0 Implementation Working Group and eloquence Manager, Firebrand Technologies

  • The Industry Champion Award is given to an individual whose efforts have gone beyond the requirements of his or her position to advance the publishing industry while embracing BISG's mission to facilitate innovation and shared solutions for the benefit of all companies and practitioners who create, produce, and distribute published content. The 2015 recipient was Fran Toolan, "Chief Igniter" and CEO, Firebrand Technologies. Other nominees for the shortlist included: 
    • Peter Balis, VP & Director, Corporate Development, Wiley
    • Graham Bell, Executive Director, EDItEUR
    • Patricia Payton, Senior Manager of Publisher Relations and Content Development, Bowker

  • The Industry Innovation Award is given to the company or individual who boldly reimagines what publishing is and can be. The 2015 recipient was  Trajectory, represented by Jim Bryant, CEO and Co-Founder. The shortlist of nominees included:
    • Atlas, represented by Sanders Kleinfeld, Director of Publishing Technology, O'Reilly Media
    • Bibblio, represented by Mads Holmen, Founder and CEO
    • Inkshares, represented by Matt Kaye, VP of Marketing and Operations

The Lifetime BISG Service Award and Most Valuable BISG Volunteer are nominated by BISG staff and a jury of industry professionals, and selected by the jury. BISG members nominate candidates for the Industry Champion Award and Industry Innovation Award; the recipient is selected by the jury.

2014 Awards

The 2014 BISG Industry Awards were presented in four categories: 

The Most Valuable BISG Volunteer Award recognizes the recipient’s commitment to solving industry challenges and finding new opportunities by volunteering their time and working collaboratively with industry peers. The recipient was:

  • Kempton Mooney, Research and Analytics Director, Nielsen Book, for his work as the first Chair of the Thema Working Group of the BISG Subject Codes Committee leading the development of the BISAC 2013 to Thema 1.0 mapping, and for his work on the BISAC Subject Codes Committee.

The shortlist of other nominees included:

  • Jenny Bullough, Manager, Digital Assets at Harlequin Enterprises Ltd.
  • Patricia Payton, Senior Manager Publisher Relations & Content Development, Bowker
  • Tzviya Siegman, Digital Book Standards & Capabilities Lead, Wiley.

The Industry Champion Award recognizes an individual whose efforts have gone beyond the requirements of his or her position to advance the publishing industry while embracing BISG’s mission. The 2014 award was presented to:

  • Bill Kasdorf, Vice President, Apex Content Solutions, for his work as Chair of the Content Structure Committee and on its signature EPUB 3 Support Grid, his close involvement in the Committee’s working groups, and his many broader efforts to improve standards throughout the industry.

The shortlist of nominees also included:

  • Graham Bell, Executive Director, EDItEUR
  • Maureen McMahon, President and Publisher, Kaplan Publishing
  • Richard Stark, Director of Product Data, Barnes & Noble

The Industry Innovation Award recognizes a company or individual who boldly reimagines what publishing is and can be. The 2014 recipient was:

  • BitLit (represented by Peter Hudson, Founder & CEO), for its innovative bundling app that allows publishers to offer a discounted digital edition of a book the consumer already owns, regardless of the source of their purchase.

The shortlist of other nominees included:

  • BookShout (Jason Illian, CEO)
  • eBook Architects (Joshua Tallent, Chief eBook Architect)
  • Library for All (Rebecca Macdonald, Founder and CEO)
  • Next Big Book (Alex White, CEO & Co-Founder).

The BISG Lifetime Service Award recognizes an individual’s outstanding work on behalf of BISG over the course of a career. The 2014 recipient was:

  • Judith Appelbaum, Managing Director, Sensible Solutions, a longtime member of the BISG Board of Directors, former chair of BISG’s Publications Committee and Co-Chair of the Rights Committee, and member of the Executive Committee. Throughout her career, Appelbaum has a constant focus improving the process of bringing content to readers by making it smoother and more efficient.

BISG members and a jury of industry professionals nominated candidates for the awards. The jury reviewed the nominations and selected shortlists and winners and included:

  • Peter Balis, Vice President and Director, Business Development, Global Digital Books, Wiley
  • Angela Bole, Executive Director, Independent Book Publishers Association
  • Sally Dedecker, President, Sally Dedecker Enterprises
  • Kelly Gallagher, Vice President of Content Acquisition, Ingram Content Group
  • Ashleigh Gardner, Head of Content, Publishing, Wattpad
  • Kristen McLean, Founder and CEO, Bookigee, Inc.
  • Kat Meyer, Director, Events and Community Engagement, Publishers Weekly
  • Rob Weisstuch, Vice President, Business Analysis, HarperCollins Publishers.
