Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that allows the identification of tagged items without a line of sight. It includes a tag, a reader and a computer system. There has been recent renewed interest in RFID tagging on the part of the book industry, for preventing illegal re-importation, loss prevention, and for managing inventory. Recognizing this growing interest, BISG's Manufacturing & Distribution Committee formed in late 2011 a Tag Insertion Standards Working Group to to establish and promulgate best practices for the insertion of tags at the point of manufacture for college textbooks and trade books. In April 2012, the Working Group viewed a presentation from GS1 on the current state of RFID technology and use (click here to download the presentation).
