Growing Rights Revenues: 21st-Century Solutions

In June 2020, BISG engaged GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies and its principal, Bill Rosenblatt, to study the return on investment (ROI) for various rights management solutions. This study grew out of a survey where a majority of BISG members described rights management as “critical” or “very important” to their bottom line, and also indicated that improved rights management would lead to increased business opportunities with licensees. Yet, few respondents planned to make meaningful investments in the near term. It was clear that there was an opportunity to raise general awareness of rights management solutions and their potential ROI.

Bill Rosenblatt and Steve Sieck will present the results of a series of interviews conducted with more than a dozen publishing rights executives across all major segments of book publishing, including trade, higher ed, STM, professional, academic. These findings demonstrate the financial return on their use of rights management tools, processes, and services, ranging from simple databases to enterprise-class solutions and cloud-based rights marketplaces. Results will be broken down by business activity and industry segment.

Bill RosenblattBill Rosenblatt is President of GiantSteps Media Technology Strategies, the consulting firm he founded in 2000. He is a globally recognized authority on technology issues pertaining to intellectual property in the digital age. He has contributed to standards initiatives related to content identification, metadata, and rights, including the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), MPEG-REL rights expression language, and Readium LCP DRM for EPUB ebooks.

Bill began his professional experience with rights management as Director of Publishing Systems at Times Mirror Co. in the mid-1990s. He was assigned to represent the company on the AAP Enabling Technologies Committee, which was looking into the emerging issue of rights management in the networked digital age. The DOI, which Bill helped design, arose out of that initiative—which considered some of the same questions about the business benefits of rights management that BISG is looking to answer through this consulting project. Bill continued his involvement with the DOI after moving to Sun Microsystems, where he helped facilitate the first working prototype of the DOI system. At Sun, Bill assumed consulting, marketing, and business development roles in the media and publishing industries.
