The Thema working group contributed to the development of the Thema international standard for book subject classification. It continues to monitor revisions to the standard, and it maps BISAC to Thema whenever BISAC Subject Headings are updated. The working group is chaired by Michael Olenick, Bowker.
Thema is managed by EDItEUR. Further details about Thema can be found on the EDItEUR website. EDItEUR has also opened a mailing list for Thema implementation queries. Anyone can join the Thema mailing list here.
Working Group Goals
The Thema working group meets periodically to:
- Monitor standards and update the mapping as new releases are issued
- Suggest updates to Thema that reflect needs specific to the U.S. market
- Provide instructions on how the BISAC-to-Thema mapping should be used
Why work on Thema?
The mapping is aimed at publishers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and aggregators who utilize BISAC and wish to provide Thema subjects for markets that use the Thema list. In particular, this will be useful for those companies that have, or wish to develop, an international presence.
What can you expect from our work?
Our working group contributed to the development of Thema 1.2, which was published in May 2016. Updates within the current standard, including support for translations, continue to be made by EDItEUR.
An updated map of BISAC to Thema, based on the 2016 BISAC Subject Headings, will also be published by the end of 2016
