Updating the Rights Solutions Provider Grid

BISG does its most important work in committee. When we’re discussing issues related to metadata, rights, content structure, subject codes, or the overall supply chain, we turn to one or more of our committees to gain an industry perspective on our challenges and opportunities.
In 2017, the rights committee provided two examples of how that process works. At BookExpo last year, we published a ground-breaking report, Publishing Rights: An Untapped Opportunity, that offered six observations about rights and royalties management. When that report showed clear interest in learning more about commercial solutions, the committee surveyed the industry to gather data that became our first overview of the market.
After the solutions “grid” was published, we heard one question more than any other: “How do I get included on the next version?” The committee went to work updating the earlier survey, and today we’re able to announce that the 2018 survey is now open and looking for updates.
The survey is divided into six sections:
- Integration, customization, and access
- Solutions functionality
- Solutions capabilities
- Contact information
These sections follow the format used for the earlier survey, but we’ve changed the content or the focus of some of the questions in each section. This is an area where the committee’s particular expertise comes into play.
We learned from last year’s results that various solutions providers interpreted a couple of the questions in different ways. In a few other cases, the lists of possible answers missed some core capabilities, something we saw when we asked for “other” answers. Members of the rights committee reviewed and modified the survey to address these shortcomings in the earlier instrument.
What does this mean for you? If you provide any type of solution for rights and royalty management, now is the time to respond to the survey. If you completed it last year, please complete it again. The questions have been updated, and we want to make sure we capture a current snapshot of your products.
And if you missed the opportunity to respond last year, now is the time to change that. Publisher requirements are both broad and deep, and we want to include as many solutions as we can. Participation is not limited to BISG members, and we will be distributing the results to the industry, without charge.
BISG and our committees are sensitive to survey overload, and we’ve limited the product portion to just 20 questions, most of them multiple choice. The final section adds six more questions, but they are all related to contact information. You know you already have a great product; we just want to be able to point people there.
The survey will remain open until noon on November 21, the day before the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday. But don’t wait! Navigate to the survey now, or send this link to a colleague and ask them to answer the questions for your company. In doing so, you’ll make sure your solutions are included, and you’ll be helping us build a better informed, more transparent book industry.
If this work interests you, consider being part of a BISG committee. Participation is open to any employee of a BISG member company, and the “ask” is manageable: one committee meeting a month, with remote participation (via Zoom) always supported. We also look to committee members to do work outside of the formal meetings, but that’s voluntary and can be taken on at your discretion.
