Mark your calendars: the 2019 BISG Annual Meeting of Members is coming up on April 26th, and it's the biggest supply-chain event of the year. Themed "Innovation Across The Supply Chain," the meeting will focus on the creative and effective methods the industry is using to move publishing forward, and the individuals who have increased sales, improved capacity, or made their workflows even more efficient.
Today, we are thrilled to announce a robust slate of guest speakers, keynotes, moderators, and award recipients that will make up the most remarkable meeting yet. The full agenda is posted on the BISG web site and included at the end of this post, but here are some highlights.
In January, BISG announced that long-time industry consultant Mike Shatzkin would receive the Sally Dedecker Lifetime Service Award, honoring his commitment to the book business over a 50-year career. Today, we're announcing that BISG volunteer Robin Seaman, who we lost after a brief illness in January, will be recognized with our Industry Champion Award. Robin's work to inform the community about accessibility opportunities and best practices continues as a lasting legacy.
The annual meeting starts this year with a "fireside chat" between Matt Baehr (Book Manufacturing Institute) and Janet McCarthy Grimm (Lindemeyr Paper) about the recent challenges the industry has faced getting books through to retail. It's a timely and topical issue, and these two industry veterans are prepared to talk frankly about how we can address the situation.
They'll be followed by a panel that includes two literary agents (Ginger Clark and Dorothy Vincent) and two publishers (Debbie Engel, Lance Fitzgerald) talking about innovating to grow rights income. As the market for rights transactions grows, the opportunities (and some challenges) grow, as well. Chris Kenneally (Copyright Clearance Center) will moderate.
A panel on efficiencies will be led by Phil Madans, who has overseen a wide range of workflow and IT efforts for Hachette. Joining him are Andy Hughes (PRH), Catherine Felgar (Princeton University Press), and Michelle
Vu (HMH). You'll hear how these publishers are all working to improve their operations.
They'll be followed by a group who are "innovating to increase sales." Confirmed participants include Dennis Abboud, Jr. (ReaderLink) and Margaret Harrison (Ingram Content Group). Look for announcements about other participants over the next couple of weeks.
Over lunch, we'll recognize Mike Shatzkin, honor Robin Seaman, and ask the membership to approve new directors for the BISG Board. After that, look for a panel on "The Innovative Workforce", where representatives from Wattpad, StoryFit, PRH, and Hachette Livre will talk about how their companies work to encourage an innovative mindset.
We're planning to wrap up with a special keynote. As with the sales panel, look for an announcement shortly. The full agenda follows, along with a registration link. We're looking forward to seeing you on April 26!
