You might picture BISG's dedicated staff hard at work in our Midtown offices, a stone's throw from the Empire State Building. What you probably don't know is how hard BISG works outside of the office, traveling to conferences and events all over the book publishing industry.
As a supply-chain organization, we attend and support events across the industry. We also attend association leadership and development events to spend time with fellow book-centric associations such as IBPA and BMI, while learning tips to better serve our membership.
An industry veteran, BISG executive director Brian O'Leary is often a panelist or a keynote speaker at industry conferences. Read on to discover where BISG has been recently, as well as where you can catch one or both of us next!
Earlier this year, Brian attended the Book Manufacturers Institute’s spring management meeting, held in Charlotte, NC. Its theme, "Automation 4.0", addressed the needs of printers and their suppliers to further extend their capabilities in AI and machine learning. BMI executive director Matt Baehr had opened the BISG annual meeting with Janet McCarthy Grimm in a fireside chat on the current state of the printing and paper markets, and this collaboration will continue between BISG and BMI for an event in early 2020.
In May, Brian delivered a keynote presentation (“Change is a Team Sport”) at Canon’s “Next Chapter 2019” event, held in Florida. That month, he also attended Klopotek’s Publishers Forum in Berlin. At the end of the month, BISG staff attended BookExpo, meeting with members and colleagues at the New York-based trade fair. While at BookExpo, Brian was part of an ALA-led panel on libraries and digital lending. Other participants included Skip Dye, who leads the library outreach efforts at PRH, as well as Veronda Pitchford (Califa) and Steve Spohn (Rhode Island Library System).
In June, Brian delivered the opening keynote, “Publishing in the Exponential Age”, at Readmagine, held in Madrid. Organized by the IPDA and a Spanish-market publishing think tank that parallels BISG, the event addressed new models and new opportunities for publishers.
Also in June, Brian presented the findings and recommendations of BISG’s white paper, “Exploring Open Access Usage”, at both the annual meeting of the Association of University Presses in Detroit, and the OAI11 open-access meeting that took place in Geneva.
This month, BISG attended the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Annual Conference and Exposition in Columbus, OH. The event included demos of new association technology, small-association networking events, and educational courses about delivering member benefits and improving member experience. Look for changes in how we serve you!
Upcoming outreach for BISG includes Digital Book World in Nashville, where Brian will discuss open access with Kevin Hawkins (University of North Texas). He'll also be the "honored" guest at DBW's first celebrity roast.
Following DBW, Brian will present at the Book Publishers of Alberta conference, and participate in a piracy panel at ECPA. BISG will also be exhibiting at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October.
Let us know if you will be at any of the upcoming outreach events, and please connect with BISG if we will be in a city near you. We enjoy meeting with members and colleagues to discuss where the publishing industry is going and what we can do together to simplify and strengthen the supply chain for publishers, manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, librarians, and others engaged in the business of book publishing.
