I Never Met-A-Data I Didn't Like

In the early evening of May 21, nearly six dozen lovers of bookish trivia, organized across 25 cleverly named teams, battled to the final question before closing out BISG's closest-ever trivia contest in a tie. Well, so far, it's our only trivia contest, but it really did come down to the wire.

The winners? "Best American Trivia Team" lived up to its name, tied with "schema:moralHazard". The two wound up just one point ahead of the popular "Team Scrubbing Bubbles" and three ahead of "Wuthering Blights" and "Keep Calm and Stet On". All five teams earned bragging rights, which they richly deserve and in some cases were already claiming before the contest began.

All of the registration revenue was matched by BISG and donated to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation, which will receive $1,500 to help booksellers in need across the country. Several Binc staffers joined the contest, and industry associations IBPA, AUPresses, and Poets & Writers all fielded teams. But fun and some very clever names (looking at you, "I Never Met-A-Data I Didn't Like") ruled the evening.

The questions were tough, as bookish trivia can be. Julie Blattberg led the effort to challenge the teams with the barely known, and the contest organizers at CourseHorse kept a brisk pace. There were both kudos and brickbats for the musical interludes, with the complaints largely left at the doorstop of BISG executive director Brian O'Leary. The claim that the musical choices were not his was quickly and officially dismissed.

The sidebar chat, now lost to Zoom history, added humor and a conversation that flew by as tensions mounted in the final two rounds. When the winners were announced, those with video shared moments of elation - who has not dreamed of winning a BISG trivia contest? - and genuine disappointment. Almost immediately, there was a widespread call to "do this again." We will, but first we need to stir up a new batch of bookish trivia.

For posterity, here are the team names in the order in which they finished. Look for them the next time BISG organizes this event!
