Metadata Committee

BISG's Metadata Committee oversees the development and maintenance of the ONIX for Books standard in the U.S. market. On behalf of the U.S. supply chain, the committee suggests changes to the ONIX standard and its code lists. In addition, the committee acts as a forum for its members to discuss current issues in ONIX and metadata in general, sharing ideas and solutions across a broad spectrum of companies, including both data senders and recipients.

In addition to other ongoing work, the Committee published and maintains the Best Practices for Product Metadata: Guide for North American Data Senders and Receivers, which is updated regularly. The committee is chaired by Richard Stark of Barnes & Noble.

Committee Goals

The Metadata committee is organized to:

  • Recommend standards and best practices that improve the quality of product metadata and the interoperability of that metadata across all markets
  • Make ongoing revisions to best practices for product metadata
  • Provide input to the ONIX International Steering Committee for ongoing development of the ONIX standard

    Why work on Metadata?

Publishers, booksellers, librarians, educators and readers all benefit from more accurate and robust product metadata. The increase in book sales that results from more complete and accurate product metadata has been documented in research conducted by Nielsen. The Metadata committee works to document, share and refine approaches to metadata management that benefit the supply chain.

What can you expect from our work?

    • Update the Best Practices for Product Metadata in early 2017
    • Ongoing participation in ONIX Code List and Product Message development
    • Review the work and deliverables of Committee working groups
