Bradley Metrock, CEO of Score Publishing
When and how did you get your start in the publishing industry?
In 2014 after selling a previous business, I started learning some publishing tools and more about how technology had changed the industry.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you first started out?
When we acquired Digital Book World in late 2017, no one knew us. As in, literally no one. So it took some time to cultivate relationships and understand the players across the industry.
The 2019 theme for BISG is Innovation. In that spirit, what industry innovation are you most excited about?
Innovation, which is essentially productive and positive change, is all around the publishing industry today. Tech innovations such as voice assistants and smart speakers are beginning to change the way people discover and enjoy books. Financial innovations have driven key M&A activity this year, from Penguin Random House investing in Sourcebooks to Waterstones acquiring Barnes & Noble. Operational and marketing innovations abound, from companies like Blinkist to Gimlet Media to Wattpad. Digital Book World will cover all of these and more, and we're grateful for all of the organizations leading the way with pioneering work in one way or another.
Why are you a member of BISG?
We became a member after meeting Brian O'Leary and seeing his drive and passion for supporting the industry. It's infectious and it was quite obvious this was a person and a partner organization that had the capability of driving progress.
What is one surprising fact about you?
I am a classically-trained pianist (though an out-of-practice one these days) and if you search for my name on Spotify or Apple or any other music service, you'll find a piano instrumental album I recorded back in 2004 which had several positive reviews, including one from Ken Burns. I've always been a believer in the positive role music plays in our lives - probably why I live in Music City USA!
