What it means to "Move Fast and Fix Things"

For the past nine years, my BISG 'elevator pitch' has been, "We solve problems that affect two or more parts of the book business." While we sometimes fall short, BISG does try to "move fast", as supply-chain challenges can affect product visibility, product sales, rights revenues, shipping and returns expenses, even access to markets.

In planning this year's annual meeting, we chose to start with a conversation between Joshua Tallent (Firebrand Technologies) and James Miller (Barnes & Noble), asking them to share what "Move Fast & Fix Things" means at their organizations. For the past two years, Joshua and James have served as chair and vice chair of the BISG board, overseeing our organization while also helping to manage change at their own companies. Their perspectives marry what their organizations need and what BISG works to provide.

Because Firebrand and B&N represent two different parts of the publishing supply chain, understanding their experiences will help set the stage for the rest of the day. As a technology provider with nearly four decades of experience serving the book business, Firebrand has evolved both its products and its technology over time to meet changing market requirements. That hasn't always been easy, and market demands don't pause for anyone.

Founded in 1873, Barnes & Noble has an even longer legacy. After it was bought by Len Riggio in 1971, the company made numerous acquisitions, adding new bookstores throughout the country. In the early 1990s, it pioneered  the concept of the “superstore,” which combined a deep selection of book titles with an experienced bookselling staff in comfortable and spacious settings. More recently, B&N has introduced new stores featuring a contemporary aesthetic with books at the center, expanded food and beverage offerings, while maintaining a welcoming customer experience.

The environment for technology and bookselling continues to evolve, as does the industry at large. In conversation, Joshua and James will share how their organizations have adapted to serve the industry and compete in ways that remain true to their core values and responsive to marketplace demands. Join us  that day to hear first-hand how their experiences can help you address your own challenges.

The BISG annual meeting will take place on April 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. A full agenda is posted on the event page, and tickets for the annual meeting are on sale now. Individual tickets are available for purchase by members ($449) and nonmembers ($549). Tables for 10 attendees can also be purchased. Reserved seating in the first three rows of The Times Center can be secured by purchasing a premium ticket.
