The day-to-day operations of BISG are run by a three-person team: Executive Director Brian O'Leary, Operations Manager Brooke Horn, and Liz Bartek, our Marketing & Communications Manager. We also rely on our Board of Directors and the volunteers in our Committees to help us continue to provide the services needed to ensure BISG supports our members.

As Executive Director, Brian helps ensure that BISG disseminates information, creates and implements standards, and conducts research to benefit the book publishing supply chain.

Before being named to this role in 2016, he was principal of Magellan Media Consulting, which helped publishers improve how they create, manage, and distribute content. In that role, Brian wrote extensively about issues affecting the publishing industry. He also co-edited Book: A Futurist's Manifesto (O'Reilly Media, 2012) with Hugh McGuire.

Brian served as SVP with Hammond Inc. and oversaw production and distribution operations at several Time Inc. magazines. He joined Time Inc. after earning an MBA from Harvard Business School and also holds an AB in chemistry from Harvard College.

Brian tries to dedicate his spare time to gardening and building model rockets and model railroads. His favorite author is Thomas Wolfe (not Tom Wolfe—an entirely different kettle of fish).

In addition to her role at BISG, Brooke serves as the copyeditor for The Journal of San Diego History. Based in Brooklyn, she enjoys exploring the many parks, museums, and purveyors of caffeinated beverages New York City has to offer. An avid hiker and kayaker, she has an enduring soft spot for the works of JRR Tolkien, Becky Chambers, and Nicola Griffith.

Before coming to BISG, Liz oversaw marketing and events at RJ Julia, a respected independent bookseller based in Madison, Connecticut. There, she served as a member of the management team overseeing operations for three retail locations, one e-commerce affiliate, as well as strategic planning, budgeting, and staffing. In this role Liz oversaw all marketing strategy and activities, including content creation for social media, websites, and e-commerce, as well as e-mail newsletters, advertisements, product promotions, and more.

Liz has been responsible for community outreach to local businesses, non-profits, and schools and universities, building beneficial relationships and cross-promotional opportunities. She oversaw sponsorship relationships on behalf of the stores, and she served as RJ Julia's point of contact for publishers, publicists, authors, writing groups, local and national press/media, and customers. In her prior role as RJ Julia's events manager, Liz was responsible for scheduling and executing over 350 events across three bookstores.
