ALLISON C. BELAN is the Director for Strategic Innovation and Services at Duke University Press, publisher of scholarly journals and books in the humanities, social sciences, and humanities. Allison works to align all aspects of the Press's digital publishing strategy and operations to build a digital presence that connects the world to Duke University Press's scholarship. She articulates the Press's innovation strategies and leads key projects to execute them. Allison also manages the Scholarly Publishing Collective and Project Euclid, two initiatives that provide publishing infrastructure to other non-profit publishers.
RICK JOHNSON is the Vice President of Solutions Engineering & Accessibility, and one of the founders of VitalSource Technologies, LLC. VitalSource is the maker of Bookshelf®, the most widely used platform for delivery of electronic materials in the world. At VitalSource, Rick manages the strategic solutions of the fast growing platform, guiding the architecture, and implementation of its clients and systems, and is the executive sponsor for all accessibility initiatives across the diverse platform. Prior to VitalSource, Rick spent more than 12 years with Apple Computer, Inc.
Rick's career has been focused on bringing together his three passions: technology, publishing, and education. He is a frequent speaker on electronic textbooks, their integration into an institutional environment, and how the accessibility needs of individual students can best be accommodated in their delivery. He has served on multiple committees addressing the needs around delivering accessible content to students, was a member of the working groups responsible for version 2 and version 3 of the EPUB standard, currently serves on the board of directors for 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) and Benetech, and is the co-inventor of three domestic and international patents dealing with electronic books and their distribution. Rick also serves on the board of directors for several non-profit ministries.
GREGORIO PELLEGRINO, Chief Accessibility Officer at Fondazione LIA, is an Italian software engineer with a strong focus on improving digital accessibility for visually impaired individuals. His expertise is reflected in his co-editing of key industry documents, such as W3C EPUB Accessibility 1.1, the Accessibility Metadata Display Guide for Digital Publications 2.0, and the EPUB Accessibility - EU Accessibility Act Mapping. He is also technical leader of the DAISY Consortium's "Accessible EPUB from InDesign Expert Group," working with Adobe to enhance the accessibility of EPUBs exported from InDesign. Pellegrino's work with organizations like W3C, DAISY, and EDItEUR helps shape global accessibility standards. Through his consulting, training, and standards development efforts, he continues to support more inclusive reading experiences in digital publishing.
