BISG Updates Its Field Guide to Fixed-Layout Ebooks
First published in 2013, BISG's Field Guide to Fixed Layout for Ebooks has been revised and updated to include current information about best practices in the creation and management of fixed-layout formats. The new version, numbered 2.0, was created by BISG's workflow committee. It builds on work done by its predecessor, BISG's content structure committee.
The new version contains changes throughout the document, which covers how to create a fixed-layout publication, synching text and audio, managing interactivity and the use of Javascript, and authoring tools. New or enhanced sections address accessibility and retailer (platform) standards that will help publishers understand what fixed-layout features may be supported at various outlets.
The work was led by Rachel Comerford (Macmillan Learning), past chair of the BISG workflow committee, and includes contributions from Dave Cramer (Hachette Book Group), Marisa DeMeglio (DAISY Consortium), Wendy Reid (Rakuten Kobo), Natasha Wolfe (Macmillan Learning), Linda Secondari (Studiolo Secondari), Michael Haskell (Columbia University Press), and Tyler Carey (Westchester Publishing). The first edition was developed and updated in 2013 and 2014 under the leadership of content structure committee chair Bill Kasdorf (Publishing Technology Partners).
The update is available for download at no charge from the BISG web site, under "Downloadable Resources." On June 14, BISG will offer a webinar overview of the document and its content. Registration for that event is open now.
